Coach Mark Schumaker is entering his 12th season coaching high school basketball. Last year, Coach Schumaker led the Wolves to a 16-13 record and earned the #11 seed in the 6A State Playoffs, while leading the Wolves to their first playoff victory since 2013. Prior to coming to Desert Mountain, he was the head varsity coach at Coronado High School in Scottsdale where he led the Dons to their first region title in over 20 years and an Elite 8 finish in the 2016 AIA Division III State Playoffs. Prior to that, he served as the Varsity coach at North Pointe Prep and the freshman coach at Ironwood Ridge High School in Tucson. He helped Ironwood Ridge win the 2008 5A-II state title, his second overall and first as a coach. A native of the valley, Coach Shoe won a state championship as a starting guard for Thunderbird High School his senior year under legendary Head Coach Buddy Rake. In the offseason, Coach Shoe coaches club basketball for Powerhouse Hoops. After high school, Coach Schumaker earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Arizona and completed a Master’s Degree from Grand Canyon University. Coach Schumaker is a special education teacher on campus and enjoys being able to see his players daily. Coach Schumaker is also the Head Girls Tennis Coach who recently won the 6A State Championship last year.

Coach Achtzehn was born and raised in Scottsdale, AZ and he also graduated from Saguaro High School where he was named City of Scottsdale Player of the Year, All Region Player of the year and All State his senior year. After High School Dana went to Mesa Community College, playing for some of the top coaches in the State of AZ, Tom Bennett and Royce Yourie. At MCC the team was ranked #1 in the country at the end of his sophomore year. After MCC Dana received a Division 1 scholarship to Southern Utah University. As a team captain at SUU Dana helped lead the team to it’s first 20 win season, during his senior, Dana averaged 21 pts and 9.5 rebounds per game while shooting 58% from the field, ranking him in the top 50 Division 1 players in all 3 areas during his senior year. Dana finished his career with 34 career double doubles. He also ended his career ranked in the top ten all time in rebounding, single season scoring, and career field goal percentage. He also earned team MVP and Athlete of the Year for SUU. Dana has 20+ years of coaching in both youth and High Schools basketball (Horizon High School, & Tempe High School as Varsity Assistant). Dana and his wife Lisa have 3 kids, son Cole who is a currently a sophomore at Hastings College (NAIA) playing football, daughters Rylee (sophomore varsity volleyball player at Desert Mountain) and Samantha.

This upcoming year will be Coach Donald Herzer’s 11th year working alongside Coach Schumaker. The previous 3 seasons prior to Desert Mountain, Coach Donald captained the Junior Varsity team at Coronado high school; leading the JV Dons to back-to-back double-digit-win seasons for the first time in over 10 years. Prior to that, he was an assistant at North Pointe Prep and Ironwood Ridge. His junior year at Ironwood Ridge, Donald was part of a 5A-II state championship team. Outside of the season, he coaches a team for Powerhouse Hoops. Donald attended the University of Arizona where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Business Economics before moving to Phoenix to begin a career for the mortgage company Provident Funding where he currently is employed. In his free time Donald enjoys hiking, golf, and spending time with his girlfriend Jessica and their dog Bridgette.
- Sean O’KeefeFreshman Head CoachSean O’KeefeFreshman Head CoachCoach O’Keefe is entering his second season as the Head Freshman Coach at Desert Mountain and his third year as part of Coach Schumaker’s staff. He was a player for Coach Schumaker at Ironwood Ridge and grew up in Oro Valley and still holds the school record for 28 charges in a season. Coach O’Keefe was a part of two runner up teams in the State finals and won a State Championship in 2008. He went on to NAU where he was lucky enough to meet coaches like Sean Miller, Josh Pastner, and Ben Howland. Coach O’Keefe looks forward to the opportunity to develop and grow better young men.

Coach David Flick is entering his first season as an assistant coach with the Desert Mountain program. He has 18 years of basketball coaching experience, during his past 6 years in Arizona he has served the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Veritas Prep (2015-2018), Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Glendale Community College (2015) and Head Girls Basketball Coach at Tolleson High School (2012-2014). Prior to coaching in AZ, he served as varsity assistant or associate head coach in girls and boys basketball coach in programs in Kansas, Kentucky and Michigan over an 11 year span starting in 2000. He is thankful to Coach Schumaker and the coaches, players in the program for the opportunity and being so welcoming and is excited for the success all levels of the program will have this season.
